It is independently owned and operated by the Baker family, who purchased the newspaper in 1927. The Register-Guard won the General Excellence Award for Oregon dailies in July 2010 and 2011. When Alton F. Baker began publishing the newspaper, he printed this motto on its editorial page: "A Citizen of its Community".
